In 1939, the world was introduced to one of the most beloved movies of all time. The Wizard of Oz became a classic and has been considered a staple in American pop culture ever since.
The Wizard of Oz follows the main character, Dorothy (Judy Garland), who with her dog Toto, seeks shelter in their farmhouse in Kansas during a tornado. The house is swept up by the tornado and transported to another dimension, to the Land of Oz. This new world is unlike anything she's ever known, filled with witches, flying monkeys, and other magical beings. Dorothy begins a perilous journey to the Emerald City to see the all-powerful Wizard of Oz to seek his help in returning home to Kansas. Along the way she befriends a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man who needs a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage. She also encounters many creatures who attempt to stop her journey, including The Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton).
It's easy to see why The Wizard of Oz has become such a beloved piece of work over the years. The film features an excellent cast, beautiful costumes, and breathtaking choreography. The movie was nominated for six Oscars in 1940 but only came away with two awards: best song and best score. Despite not winning many awards, The Wizard of Oz still remains one of the highest grossing films in history. The film has become so popular over the years that it has spawned several remakes, video games, and even a musical.
Movie Characters include Dorothy, a young Kansas farm girl; Toto, her dog; Auntie Em, Uncle Henry, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, The Cowardly Lion, Glinda the Good Witch, the Munchkins, The Wicked Witch of the East, and The Wicked Witch of the West.
