1950's Fashion

Fashion of the 1950s swung away from the practical war-time looks of the ‘40s toward a more traditionally feminine look.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Christian Dior debuted his "New Look" silhouette which swept across Europe and America.  The dress shape was totally feminine and characterized by a nipped-in waist with full skirts that required crinoline undergarments for support.  This new silhouette became an instant success, bringing back beauty to women after the war ravaged their lives for so long.

Fashion icons of the 1950s were stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Sophia Loren, James Dean, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelley.

The 1950s saw the introduction of many new fabrics like rayon, a synthetic fiber that was often blended with cotton and wool.  Plus there were plenty of patterns to choose from including gingham, plaid, Paisley, polka dots and geometric shapes!

The 50s were a time of change and new beginnings.   It was the decade where we saw the rise of rock 'n' roll, TV, and fast food. And it was also a time when women started to take on more responsibility in their homes and workplaces. There are many different styles from this era that have stood the test of time - so if you're looking for something classic or vintage, then look no further!  Poodle skirts, pencil skirts, saddle shoes, wide-leg trousers with loafers...you name it!  Fashion-wise this decade is famous for clothing such as cardigans or jumpers - especially in black or navy blue. While skirts became shorter during this time period they still tended to be conservative by today's standards at about knee length.

Who doesn't love the fashions of the 1950's?  Young or old fashionistas are sure to enjoy this selection of vintage style 50s dresses, 50s pants styles, and 1950s outfits that were popular during one of America’s most iconic decades - the 50s!
